Mike Dinneen has been named basketball coach at University High School in Irvine, the school announced Tuesday.
Dinneen, 31, spent 10 seasons at St. Paul in Santa Fe Springs and was named Angelus League coach of the year in 1986. He replaces Steve Scoggin, who resigned in March after coaching six seasons at University. The Trojans were 5-18 overall, 0-10 in Sea View League play last season.
Dinneen, who also will be a full-time teacher, was hired over Mike Hess, a former guard at UC Irvine; Brian Mulligan, son of Anteater Coach Bill Mulligan and an assistant at Capistrano Valley, and Bob Thate, a former UCI assistant who was recently hired as an assistant at Cal State Long Beach.
Scoggin will remain at the school as a physical education teacher.
