L.A. County’s Redistricting Plan Puts Edelman in Latino District

Share

The redistricting map is what Dana says--”politics!” It makes a mockery of democracy. The fingers west of the Civic Center divide District 5, and the dip into West Hollywood to create a battleground between gays and Latinos. Hopefully, the court will turn down the proposal.

One doesn’t have to be a genius to look at a map of Los Angeles County to learn the distinct ethnic and income groups are within areas that are inside the boundaries of our freeway system that radiates from the Civic Center. The redistricting should be grouped accordingly. And if need be, to assure racial and ethnic equality in the elected process, the districts should be increased from five to seven.

(My, oh my, what happened to the ideal of an integrated society that focused on individual rather than group worth and competition?)
