Racing in rainy conditions, Wayne Rainey of Downey led throughout to win the Belgian 500cc motorcycling Grand Prix, extending his world championship lead over Kevin Schwantz of Paige, Tex., at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium.
France’s Jean-Philippe Ruggia, who had never competed in a 500cc event on a wet track, finished second.
Rainey’s victory was his fifth in nine races this year and left him with 168 points in the world championship series, 35 ahead of Schwantz with six races remaining.
