The St. Louis Cardinals, searching for a replacement for Whitey Herzog, have received permission from the Philadelphia Phillies to talk to coach Hal Lanier, former Houston manager.
Lanier, who managed the Astros to the National League West title in 1986, was a St. Louis coach from 1981 through ’85.
The Cardinals also plan to interview Angel broadcaster Joe Torre, a former manager of the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves.
