Klein Reaches Quarterfinals of Texas Golf Event

Emilee Klein of Studio City, the top qualifier in Monday’s stroke-play competition, has advanced past the first two rounds of match play in the 64th Women’s Western Golf Assn. Junior Invitational in Austin, Tex.

Klein defeated Trisha Laxton of Crystal River, Fla., 2 and 1, on Wednesday to move into the quarterfinals, in which she will play Erin O’Neil of Zephyr Hills, Fla., this morning. The 16-year-old Klein defeated Kelly Ann Kemper of Lewisville, Tex., 5 and 4, on Tuesday.

The semifinals will be held this afternoon and the championship match Friday.

Klein, the California amateur champion, fired a six-over-par 78 on Monday, one shot better than Kemper, at the Lakeway Country Club.

Klein also was the medalist in the 1989 WWGA tournament.

John Wordin of West Hills placed 30th in a field of 220 cyclists in the 110-mile Tour of Holy Hill road race in Hartford, Wis., on Monday.

Wordin, who rides for the L. A. County Sheriff’s Dept. cycling team, placed 68th overall in the Casper Classic series in Casper, Wyo., which took place June 20-July 4.

Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys was eighth at Casper.

Bobby Hughes, a 1989 graduate of Notre Dame High, was selected to Baseball America magazine’s college freshman All-American second team.

Hughes, who batted .348 with 10 home runs and 42 runs batted in at Loyola Marymount, was selected as a designated-hitter.

He also played third base for LMU.

Occidental College has hired new coaches for swimming and water polo. Peggy Lynn Carl will coach the men’s and women’s swimming teams. Carl coached the women’s team at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., since 1983.

After coaching the Glendale High swimming and water polo teams, Pete Loporchio will take over Occidental’s water polo team.

Loporchio majored in physical education at Cal State Northridge.
