Share

Paced by the singles play of 17-year-old Amy Frazier, the Newport Beach Dukes defeated the Wellington Aces, 26-19, Tuesday in Wellington Fla., to win their third consecutive Team Tennis match.

Frazier broke a 14-14 tie with a 6-0 victory over Jenny Byrne and Heather Ludloff in women’s singles. Frazier, who has won all four of her sets for the Dukes this season, took a 3-0 lead against Byrne before playing out the set against Ludloff, who substituted for Byrne.

“She’s almost like an automatic point for us now,” Dukes Coach Greg Patton said.

Frazier’s victory gave the Dukes (3-1) a 20-14 lead going into the final set--men’s doubles. Marty Davis and Roger Smith defeated Rick Brown and Scott Warner, 6-5 (5-2), to avoid overtime and give the Dukes the victory.

Wellington (2-2) took an early lead as Brown and Ludloff defeated Sophie Amiach and Davis in mixed doubles, 6-2. Smith then took a 5-3 lead over Warner in men’s singles and served out the set, 6-3, after Scott replaced Warner. The Dukes then tied the score when Amiach and Frazier beat Byrne and Ludloff in women’s doubles, 6-5 (5-4).

The Dukes continue their trip today with a match against the Raleigh (N.C.) Edge, the only team to beat the Dukes this season.
