Santa Monica : Historic District Declared

Share

The Third Street Neighborhood in Santa Monica’s Ocean Park area will become the city’s first historic district, a designation unanimously approved by the City Council Tuesday night.

The historic area, as recommended by the Landmarks Commission, extends for two blocks along 2nd and 3rd streets, from Ocean Park Boulevard to Hill Street. It includes the east and west sides of 2nd and 3rd streets. Excluded from the zone was a property at the southeast corner of Hill and 3rd streets.

About 30 supporters who stayed until the 1:15 a.m. vote cheered the council’s decision. Many wore fluorescent orange stickers that read, “I’m a part of history.”

The Landmarks Commission found the Third Street Neighborhood to be worthy of historic designation based on its aesthetic, economic, historic, architectural and cultural significance to Santa Monica.

Many of the structures were built between 1880 and 1935. Particularly notable are 29 bungalows characteristic of the architectural style of the 1930s. The neighborhood is also associated with many prominent early Santa Monica residents.

The council directed the city attorney to prepare an ordinance for first reading at the Sept. 11 meeting.
