Two unidentified people--possibly illegal migrants--were killed Saturday as they held hands and attempted to cross Interstate 5, authorities said Sunday.
The man and woman were running from east to west across the southbound lanes of the freeway about a mile south of the Border Patrol checkpoint at 8:52 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The couple was struck by one vehicle and four other cars collided in an attempt to avoid hitting the victims. The two southbound lanes of I-5 highway were closed for three hours, according to the California Highway Patrol.
One car involved in the accident fled the scene.
