Killing of Dog on Freeway

I would not be so quick to judge those CHP officers who had to run down a runaway dog on the Harbor Freeway. I was a first-hand witness to the very real concern the CHP has for animals.

Some years ago, I was trapped in traffic on that same Harbor Freeway, when I glanced to my left to see quite a sight: Two CHP motorcycle officers, in immaculate uniforms and brand-new boots, kneeling in the dust and debris and fumes of the center divider, carefully wrapping gauze around the bleeding belly of a limp cat. Their tenderness was awesome.

Any animal lover knows that fear can cause a panic in animals that can make them uncontrollable and unstoppable, and a danger to themselves and others. When that happens, a quick judgment call is necessary. And you always hope you make the right call. We should extend our sympathy to those CHP officers, whom I’m sure will be haunted by this incident.
