New York Yankees pitcher Pascual Perez, who has not played since April 25, will have surgery Thursday on his right shoulder.

Perez, who has pitched only 14 innings this season after signing as a free agent for $5.7 million over three years, will be operated on by Dr. James Andrews at the Healthsouth Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala.

Yankees General Manager Pete Peterson said Perez should recover in time for spring training next season.

The 33-year-old Perez was 1-2 this season with a 1.29 earned-run average in three starts. After Perez pitched against Seattle on April 25, the Yankees said he had a muscle strain, but the injury turned out to be irritation of the lining of the shoulder joint.

Dr. Stuart Hershon, the Yankees’ physician, recommended surgery two months ago, but Perez balked, hoping his shoulder would respond to treatment.
