Deron Thornton went three for three with four runs batted in, and Vince Bucca allowed just four hits and one earned run in 5 2/3 innings to lead the Angels to their third consecutive championship of the San Diego Collegiate Summer Baseball League Monday night at San Diego State’s Smith Field.

The Angels, who had the best regular-season record (23-5) in the eight-team league and led the league in hitting (.329), had defeated the Astros, 4-3, in nine innings Sunday to win the best-of-three series, 2-0.

Behind the hitting of Mesa College’s Thornton and Grossmont College’s Tim Barry (three for three with one RBI), the Angels scored two in the first inning, four in the fourth and three in the sixth to build a 9-0 lead. The Astros scored two in the bottom of the sixth, but U.S. International-bound Tom Stilinovich struck out four of five batters he faced to end the game.
