OXNARD : Planners to Decide on La Colonia Gym

Share

The Oxnard Planning Commission today is scheduled to consider a city proposal to build an 11,000-square-foot gymnasium at a community park in La Colonia, a mostly working-class Latino neighborhood in the northeast portion of the city.

The facility, which would be built in Colonia Park at 170 N. Juanita St., would contain a 200-seat basketball gymnasium and would primarily be used by neighborhood youth basketball leagues. The main entrance would face Marquita Street.

In 1988, the city received a $450,000 state grant to pay for the gymnasium, according to a city report.

The nine-acre Colonia Park contains a day-care center, a swimming pool, two baseball diamonds, several basketball courts, a recreation building and restrooms with showers.

The 36-foot-high gymnasium would be built within a grassy portion of the park, next to the existing basketball courts and the pool, the report said.

Community Development Director Richard Maggio said the commission’s decision is final unless it is appealed to the City Council.

The commission meets at 7:30 p.m. at the council chambers.
