Regional Qualifiers to Compete for Spots on Junior Sailing Team

Seventy sailors will compete in the U.S. Yacht Racing Union/Rolex Junior Sailing Championships today through Friday at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

The boys and girls, ages 13 to 17, are qualifiers from 10 U.S. regional competitions. Winners will earn positions on the 1990 U.S. junior sailing team.

There will be 10 fleet races for 10 boats in each of three classes: four-person Etchells 22s, two-person Flying Juniors and single-handed Lasers.

Area entries include Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Jory Twist, with crew Rush Hambleton, Ryan Hamilton and Crosby Grant, in the Etchells 22 class; Mission Bay Yacht Club’s Bill Hardesty and crew Paul Ware, in the Flying Junior class, and Coronado Yacht Club’s David Houser, in Laser class.

Two other Etchells with mixed crews will be skippered by girls: Meg Gallard of the American Yacht Club, Rye, N.Y., and Amy Rosenfeld of the Island Heights (N.J.) Yacht Club. Sarah Carlson of the Shrewsbury (N.J.) Yacht Club will sail a Flying Junior with crew Peter Spaulding.
