THE SIDELINES : Illinois’ Chris Green Breaks Leg
Illinois defensive back Chris Green broke his leg on the first play of the team’s first full preseason scrimmage and will miss at least half the season, the university said.
The 5-foot-11, 181-pound senior was an all-Big Ten second-team cornerback last year. He broke up 11 passes last year, tying him for third in the Big Ten with teammate Henry Jones.
Green will be replaced in the lineup by Jerry Hamner, a 5-foot-11, 197-pound senior with special-teams and defensive backfield experience.
The Illini open their season Sept. 8 at Arizona. Their first Big Ten game is Oct. 6 at Ohio State.
