RAIDERS : Seven Players Cut; Nine More Must Go Today
- Share via
The Raiders released seven players and put another on injured reserve Monday, but they must still cut nine more players today, the NFL deadline for teams to reduce their rosters to 60 players.
Waived were safety George Streeter, wide receivers Ron Lewis and Sammy Archer, running back Myron Jones, defensive end Joe Campbell, linebacker Bruce Klosterman and defensive tackle Arthur Walker.
Guard Newt Harrell, who tore ligaments in his right knee during training camp, was put on injured reserve.
Streeter, Campbell and Klosterman were signed as Plan B free agents, Streeter from the Chicago Bears, Campbell from the San Diego Chargers and Klosterman from the Denver Broncos. Archer was an unrestricted free agent from the Chicago Bears, Lewis was an 11th-round draft pick from Jackson State and Jones was an 11th-round pick from Fresno State. Signed as a rookie free agent from Colorado, Walker returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown in a 16-14 exhibition victory over Dallas.
Will defensive tackle Lyle Alzado, trying to make a comeback at 41, survive today’s cut?
“I don’t know,” Coach Art Shell said. “We’ve still got to discuss it.
“It’s very hard,” Shell said of cutting players. “You’ve got to let good people go, people that you really like, not only as football players but as people. That’s the part of coaching I’ve always said it would be very difficult for me to deal with and it is.”
There has been no progress in negotiations with quarterback Steve Beuerlein, who remains unsigned. The Raiders have offered Beuerlein, who made $140,000 last season, $500,000.
With the Raiders’ regular-season opener against Denver less than two weeks away, Beuerlein said the dispute “is getting out of control.”
And the Raiders have been unsuccessful in their quest to acquire quarterback Bobby Hebert from the New Orleans Saints.
Saint President Jim Finks told New Orleans reporters Monday that he had rejected the Raiders’ offer for Hebert, saying, “It wasn’t a hard decision to make. As it stands now, in all probability, a trade will not be made for Bobby.”
Finks declined to disclose the Raider offer for Hebert, who has not reported to the Saints because he wants his contract renegotiated.
Raider Notes
Are the Raiders, hard hit by injuries in their secondary, interested in strong safety Dave Duerson, cut by the Chicago Bears Sunday? “We’ll take a look at a lot of people,” Coach Art Shell said. . . . The Raiders report no progress in negotiations with unsigned safety Vann McElroy.
