Compared to Western Carolina, Cal State Long Beach didn’t do so badly.

Long Beach may have lost, 59-0, to Clemson Saturday, but at least the 49ers picked up five first downs.

Western Carolina, in losing to North Carolina State, 67-0, at Raleigh, N.C., had no first downs. The Division I-AA Catamounts never got past midfield, and were outgained on the ground, 400 yards to minus four.

In total yardage, Western Carolina was outgained, 340-4, in the first half and 592-17 for the game.

Tyrone Jackson and Aubrey Shaw each scored two touchdowns, and the Wolfpack recorded two first-half safeties.

No. 8 Tennessee 55, Pacific 7--The Volunteers built up a 31-0 lead by the end of the first quarter of this mismatch at Knoxville, Tenn., witnessed by a sellout crowd of 94,467.

But Pacific of the Big West Conference has endured worse against the Southeastern Conference. Last season, the Tigers lost to Auburn, 55-0.

The game marked the return to Knoxville of Walt Harris, who was Tennessee’s offensive coordinator before taking the head coaching position at Pacific last season.

Pacific, which concentrated on the pass during a 2-10 season last year, started with Troy Kopp at quarterback, switched to Daryl Hobbs and finally got on the board with senior backup Kris King when he threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Oscar Meza midway through the fourth quarter. Kopp had to leave the game with a shoulder injury.

Despite using reserves much of the second half, Tennessee ran up 455 yards, including 305 on the ground. Pacific finished with 285, but managed only 115 in the first half.

Tennessee tailback Chuck Webb left the game with an injured right knee shortly after scoring the Vols’ first touchdown on an eight-yard run.

Kentucky 20, Central Michigan 17--In Bill Curry’s first game as Kentucky’s coach, Doug Pelfrey kicked two field goals in the second half as the Wildcats rallied to defeat the Chippewas at Lexington, Ky.

Pelfrey connected from 50 yards out with 8:27 left in the third quarter to give Kentucky a 17-14 lead. His 32-yarder with 12:23 remaining in the game accounted for the final score.

Linebacker Jeff Brady sealed the victory when he intercepted Jeff Bender’s pass at the Central Michigan 47 with four minutes left in the game.

Curry became Kentucky’s coach Jan. 8 after leading Alabama to a share of the Southeastern Conference title and a spot in the Sugar Bowl last season.

Central Michigan amassed 343 yards in total offense to only 218 for Kentucky.

North Carolina 34, Miami (Ohio) 0--This game at Chapel Hill, N.C., wasn’t such a bad mismatch.

The Tar Heels outgained the Redskins only 256 yards to 205, and it was only 14-0 at halftime. North Carolina gained only 138 yards in the first half.

But Miami of Ohio committed six turnovers--five in the second half.

South Carolina 21, Duke 10--Bobby Fuller, a transfer from Appalachian State, threw for two touchdown in the Gamecocks’ victory over the Blue Devils at Columbia, S.C.

Fuller, who started for second-year South Carolina Coach Sparky Woods when they were both at Appalachian State, had touchdown passes of 9 and 11 yards in the first half.

Fuller, ineligible a year ago because of the transfer, has replaced Todd Ellis, who set 29 school records as South Carolina’s quarterback the past four years.

On a sweltering night, the Blue Devils had only 177 yards of offense, 121 of it through the air. The Blue Devils, co-champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference, averaged 323 passing yards last season.

Maryland 20, Virginia Tech 13--Scott Zolak completed a school-record 28 passes in 46 attempts for 303 yards and teamed with Gene Thomas on a 51-yard touchdown pass play with 61 seconds remaining as the Terrapins won at College Park, Md.

Thomas caught Zolak’s pass in stride around the 35.

Southern Mississippi 12, Delta State 0--Jim Taylor kicked a pair of field goals and Tony Smith’s 46-yard punt return set up a fourth-quarter touchdown as the Golden Eagles struggled to beat the Division II Statesmen at Hattiesburg, Miss.

The game’s only touchdown came midway in the final quarter after Smith’s return gave the Golden Eagles the ball at the Delta State 18. Three plays gained only eight yards, however, and Taylor came on to attempt a 28-yard field goal. But the snap was high and, after a scramble, holder Stacy Dennis threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Anthony Harris.

Memphis State 24, Arkansas State 24--Memphis State freshman Larry Porter rushed for 206 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers and Arkansas State Indians battled to a tie at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tenn.

Porter, from Columbus, Ga., scored on runs of 53, 55 and four yards in his first game at Memphis State. His 206 yards in 23 carries represents the third highest rushing game in Memphis State history.

Southwestern Louisiana 48, Tulane 6--The Ragin’ Cajuns raced to an early 24-0 lead at New Orleans, driving 38 yards for a field goal and getting quick touchdowns following an interception, a blocked Tulane punt and a fumble recovery.
