COLLEGE FOOTBALL : John Bonds Leads Northern Arizona Over Northridge
John Bonds threw for 292 yards and four touchdowns and scored another himself as Northern Arizona made Steve Axman’s coaching debut a success with a 37-3 victory over Cal State Northridge Saturday.
Bonds, a sophomore transfer from Arizona State, teamed with Julian Howard on a 76-yard scoring bomb and with Tucker Smith on a nine-yard touchdown pass for a 14-3 halftime lead.
The Lumberjacks put the nonconference game out of reach in the third quarter when Bonds hooked up with Jerry Avery on a 63-yard touchdown pass play and then hit Hendricks Johnson for a 41-yard score 1:30 later.
Bonds, who completed 12 of 27 passes, had a six-yard touchdown run with 13:15 remaining in the game before Jeff Black’s 28-yard field goal capped Northern Arizona’s scoring with 7:28 left.
Northridge’s only points came on Abo Velasco’s 42-yard field goal early in the first quarter. It was the Matadors’ fifth straight loss to the Lumberjacks in six meetings.
