UCSD Women Win Title in Volleyball Tournament

The UC San Diego women’s team won the championship of the Labor Day Volleyball Festival by defeating Cal Poly Pomona, 16-14, 15-12, in the final at University High School in Irvine.

Elizabeth Tan, an all-tournament team selection, Vikki Van Duyne and Dana Simone combined for 21 kills in the final match for UCSD (8-0).

UCSD had earlier defeated Western New Mexico, Cal Baptist and Humbolt State to finish 6-0 in pool play, then beat Cal State Los Angeles, 16-14, 15-12, in the semifinals.

Point Loma Nazarene College (5-2) was eliminated after losing to CSLA, 12-15, 15-11, 15-11, in the opening round of the championship bracket. PLNC had earlier defeated Mount St. Mary’s and Alaska and lost to Cal Poly Pomona. PLNC setter LeAnne Lopez also was named to the all-tournament team.

MEN’S SOCCER

USIU won its season opener, defeating Grand Canyon College, 2-1, at USIU. The Gulls trailed, 1-0, at halftime but got goals from sophomore Noel Pekel and junior John Molomo in the final 22 minutes.

The University of San Diego scored three goals in the first half en route to a 4-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield at the USD Soccer Complex. Paul Gelvezon scored two goals and Alex Stricek and Phillip Button each had one for USD (2-0). The Toreros, who have not been scored upon this season, allowed just three shots.

SWIMMING

Jamshid Khajavi, 36, of San Marcos became the first person this year to complete the swim from Catalina Island to the mainland, according to a member of his support crew.

The support crew member, Jack Robertson of San Diego, said Khajavi completed the 18-mile swim in 16 hours, 12 minutes, arriving at Point Vincent near Long Beach shortly before 1 p.m.

Khajavi, a native of Iran who is now a U.S. citizen, endured seven-foot waves and high winds through the first 5 1/2 hours and later encountered two large sharks, Robertson said.
