Eagles Take the Lead in Race for Taylor

The Philadelphia Eagles have become the front-runners among three NFL teams interested in acquiring linebacker Lawrence Taylor from the New York Giants, his agent said Saturday.

“The Eagles were the first team to take the ball and run with it,” agent Joe Courrege said. “They’ve showed a serious willingness to get a deal done.”

Courrege said Friday that the Giants had given him permission to talk to other teams about Taylor, 31. The nine-time all-pro linebacker, who wants a new contract, was interested in playing for the Eagles, Raiders, Houston Oilers, San Diego Chargers or Minnesota Vikings, Courrege said. But only the Eagles, Vikings and Oilers expressed interest, he said.

The Giants have offered Taylor a $4.5-million contract over three years. Courrege said he is seeking slightly less than $6 million over three years.
