The assessment of the home of Juan Avila--who died in 1889 after making his fortune by selling cattle to gold miners in Northern California--is holding up construction of Farber’s Franciscan Plaza II. The good news? If Avila’s fabled leather chest filled with gold is unearthed, Farber splits the proceeds with the city.
