Miami of Ohio announced today that it has appointed Joby Wright, a 10-year assistant coach under Bob Knight at Indiana, to be Miami’s new basketball coach.

Wright, who turned 40 on Wednesday, replaces Jerry Peirson, who was fired Aug. 3 after he admitted that he gave a player a false grade.

Wright played for Indiana and was chosen captain of the Hoosiers and all-Big Ten in 1972. He holds two degrees from Indiana.

As an assistant coach, he was part of NCAA championship teams in 1981 and 1987, nine NCAA tournament appearances and four Big Ten titles.

Miami athletic director R. C. Johnson said Wright, who was chosen from a field of more than 50 candidates, received strong support from Knight and from Indiana football coach Bill Mallory, a former Miami football coach.
