Region : Charmlee Park Expansion

Los Angeles County will expand Charmlee Regional Park in western Malibu by buying 63 acres of rolling, sagebrush-covered land.

The county Board of Supervisors voted last week to pay West Los Angeles attorney Morton C. Devor $630,000 for the property at the north end of the park, which comprises 460 acres along Encinal Canyon Road.

The acquisition will allow the expansion of riding and hiking trails in the park, said Jim Park, chief of planning for the county Department of Parks and Recreation.

The property has been appraised at $1.1 million, but the county could afford to pay only $630,000 and Devor agreed to the lower price, Park said. Devor declined to comment.

Half of the money will come from the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the other half will come from a 1988 state bond act.
