SIMI VALLEY : Reagan Library May Be Built by Birthday
Construction of the Ronald Reagan Library will be finished in time for the former President’s 80th birthday on Feb. 6, Chuck Jelloian, director of operations of the Reagan Foundation, said Friday.
“It’s right on schedule,” Jelloian said. “We always said the building would be done in February, 1991. The building is about 80% complete, and 75% of the landscaping is finished.”
He said, however, that the building probably won’t open to the public until late 1991.
The four-level, 153,000-square-foot building will be located on Presidential Drive off Madera Road in Simi Valley. It will be the largest of the nine libraries honoring American presidents and will house a museum, an archive, two theaters, 50 million documents, 30,000 personal gifts and a small replica of the Oval Office.
The $40-million building is being financed through the nonprofit Reagan Foundation. The library will be owned and operated by the government and is expected to draw at least 500,000 people a year, Jelloian said.
