Andy Geiger was named athletic director at Maryland, replacing Lew Perkins, who resigned July 9 to take a similar post at Connecticut.

Perkins left a school mired in a number of problems, including financial difficulties, NCAA sanctions against the basketball program and disputes between the administration and the athletic department.

Geiger, the athletic director at Stanford since 1979, was given a five-year contract at $125,000 a year. His appointment is effective on Oct. 1.
