A man described as despondent and suicidal shot at police officers outside his office Friday night, then surrendered. No injuries were reported.

Wayne Donald Keller, 44, of Irvine was arrested about 11 p.m. and placed in a mental health facility for observation, Irvine police Sgt. Jim Lowder said.

Keller may later be charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, Lowder said.

A friend of Keller’s from Ohio called police Friday night to report that Keller had called--sounding suicidal and despondent--from his job at Grumman Aerospace Corp. at 2852 Kelvin Ave.

Officers arrived and Keller met them outside. He fired two shots at them with a .22-caliber revolver and, after a half-hour standoff, surrendered.

Police said they do not know what Keller did at the firm. A security official reached there Saturday said there would be no comment.
