Shooting Victim’s Premature Baby Clings to Life

BAKERSFIELD — A girl delivered two months prematurely by Cesarean section after her mother was shot to death Sunday night remained in critical condition in the Kern Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit, said hospital spokeswoman Karen Grimm.
The mother, Caroline Ruiz, 25, was shot by an unknown assailant from outside her Bakersfield home as she washed dishes Sunday evening, sheriff’s officers said. No one has been arrested.
