Jim Bonds was named UCLA’s starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against Stanford at the Rose Bowl.

Bonds was replaced by redshirt freshman Tommy Maddox in the third quarter of last Saturday’s game against Oklahoma.

In selecting Bonds over Maddox, UCLA offensive coordinator Homer Smith said that Bonds was best prepared to handle Stanford’s defense.

UCLA defensive tackle Brian Kelly will be sidelined for at least three weeks with a second-degree sprain of his left knee.

Nineteen of the 58 players who played against Oklahoma Saturday were appearing in a UCLA game for the first time.

Of the 19, three were freshmen--wide receiver Bryan Adams, defensive end Bruce Walker and cornerback Othello Henderson.

On offense, seven of the 11 starters had never started a game, and on defense four were starting for the first time as Bruins. Outside linebacker Arnold Ale and defensive end Mike Chalenski are transfers from Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, respectively.

Kicker Brad Daluiso made two field goals on the first attempts of his career, and Courtney Keyler punted for the first time.
