The Board of Directors of the Rapid Transit District, which pays nearly $200,000 a month rent for its Skid Row headquarters, voted this week to begin negotiations to build a new $30-million headquarters.

The board voted 7 to 0 during a closed session to authorize RTD officials to begin exclusive negotiations with Catellus Development Corp., a subsidiary of the Santa Fe Railway, to build the project east of Union Station on a site owned by the RTD and Santa Fe.

RTD Board President Nick Patsaouras said Catellus has 60 days to consummate the deal. The facility is expected to cost $30 million to $40 million to build.

RTD spokesman Greg Davy said the agency has been leasing a six-story building for its headquarters at 425 S. Main St. since 1979, and currently pays $195,199 a month to house about 1,000 employees.
