Dispersal kicked himself at the start, but quickly took the lead from Thirty Six Red and never gave it up in matching the stakes record of 1:45 4/5 for 1 1/8 miles in winning the Woodward Handicap at Belmont Park.

“There was some blood, but I think he will be fine,” trainer Bud Delp said of Dispersal.

Criminal Type, who went into the race as the favorite to be voted horse of the year, finished sixth in the eight-horse field.

Criminal Type, ridden by Jose Santos, had won Grade I stakes in his four previous races--the Pimlico Special, the Metropolitan Handicap, the Hollywood Gold Cup and the Whitney Handicap.

Chris Antley put 4-year-old Dispersal through fractions of 22 4/5 seconds for the quarter, 45 1/5 for the half, 1:08 3/5 for three quarters and 1:33 1/5 for the mile.

Criminal Type is trained by Wayne Lukas, whose favored Deposit Ticket finished second to Eastern Echo in the Belmont Futurity in the race before the Woodward.

Favored Criminal Type faded in the stretch as Dispersal matched the stakes record set by Forego in 1976. The track record of 1:45 2/5 was set by Secretariat in 1973.

Dispersal, who has won five consecutive races, paid $15.60, $7 and $10.60. He earned $354,000, increasing his total to $1,461,137.

Southland-based Quiet American, ridden by Chris McCarron, was 1 1/4 lengths behind in second and returned $5.80 and $10.20 for finishing 1 1/2 lengths in front of 3-year-old Rhythm, who paid $7.
