COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Women Win in Cross-County

Three UC Irvine runners finished among the first 10 to lead the Anteaters to the women’s championship of the Fresno State Cross-Country Invitational Saturday.

Buffy Rabbitt finished first, winning the 5,000-meter race at Woodward Park in 17 minutes 2.8 seconds. Irvine’s Rayna Cervantes (17:51.3) was sixth and Traci Goodrich (17:57.0) seventh, and the Anteaters point total of 75 easily outdistanced runner-up Weber State’s 95.

Ben Ayers finished third for the Irvine men’s team (76 points), which finished second to Fresno State (60). Ayers ran 25:17.1 on the five-mile course, finishing behind Aaron Mascorro, an Irvine redshirt who ran unattached (25:00.6), and Steve Frisone of Cal State Fullerton (25:14.8).

In the Azusa Pacific cross-country invitational, Southern California College’s Sherri Hall won the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes 47.2 seconds. Southern California College didn’t field a full team for the invitational, which was won by Azusa Pacific.

In the UC Irvine water polo tournament, USC and UCLA each won their matches and will meet for the championship today at 1:40 p.m. at Corona del Mar High School. UCLA, the only undefeated team in pool play, defeated Stanford, 12-6, and Cal State Long Beach, 8-5. The Bruins were led by Stefan Pollmann, who scored five goals against Stanford and four against Long Beach.

The Trojans, who went 3-1 in pool play, were led by Jason Klingsberg, who scored six goals on the day. USC beat UC Irvine, 7-6, and Cal State Los Angeles, 14-9.

Irvine, led by Pablo Yrizar who scored two goals in each Anteater loss Saturday, also lost to UC Santa Barbara, 11-10.

In the Christ College Irvine men’s soccer tournament:

Biola 3, Christ College Irvine 2--Biola scored twice in the second half to rally and defeat Christ College Irvine in the championship game. Christ College Irvine (1-5) took a 2-0 lead in the first half on a pair of goals by Aaron Clasen in the first 20 minutes of play. Clasen scored five goals in the two-day tournament. Biola (4-2-1) tied the score on Mike Humphries’ goal seven minutes into the second half, and went ahead when John Buehler scored with four minutes remaining.

In Anteater invitational women’s volleyball:

Northern Iowa 3, UC Irvine 2--Northern Iowa won the Anteater Invitational at Crawford Hall with a 7-15, 15-8, 15-6, 10-15, 15-4 victory over UC Irvine. UCI’s Kim Collins had 19 kills in the championship match and teammate Caron Pardee added 13.

Northern Iowa’s Denise Cuttell was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Collins and Pardee were named to the all-tournament team.

In a nonconference women’s volleyball match:

San Francisco 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Jennifer Cokubun had 14 kills as visiting USF (4-5) won, 15-9, 15-6, 15-6. Becky Howlett had 10 kills and Stephanie Scofield had 12 digs for the Titans (3-7)

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Cal State Fullerton 0, Seattle Pacific 0 (OT)--Goalkeeper Jay Nettekoven had five saves for the Titans (1-2-2) at Fullerton.

Claremont 4, Southern California College 0--Armando Luna, Amir Navab, Sean McQuown and Steve Barbarich each scored for host Claremont (1-2-2). Claremont goalie Sean Black had four saves. Angel Ruiz had six saves for Southern California College (1-5).
