Notes on a Scorecard - Sept. 18, 1990

Give me an old-fashioned three-hour-plus marathon like Denver-Kansas City anytime. . . .

And CBS should leave a four-hour block open Saturday for the passing duel between BYU’s Ty Detmer and San Diego State’s Dan McGwire. . . .

It’s no joke. NFL press box officials really should wave red flags to indicate that an instant-replay inspection is in order. . . .

The Raiders are getting a kick out of Jeffs--field goal kicker Jaeger and punter Gossett--two reasons the team is off to a 2-0 start. . . .

At this time last year, Keith Jackson and Cris Carter had five touchdown catches between them for the Philadelphia Eagles. . . .

Tommy Maddox’s 244 yards passing in the second half Saturday against Stanford were the most by a UCLA quarterback in a half since Steve Bono’s 301 against BYU in 1983. . . .

With redshirt freshman Maddox at the controls, the Bruins had five possessions. Three resulted in touchdowns, one in a field goal, and one in a missed field goal. . . .

Can Oklahoma, which made UCLA look better by whipping Pittsburgh, go unbeaten? The Sooners play at Colorado Oct. 27, but get Nebraska at home Nov. 17 and are ineligible to participate in a bowl game. . . .

Saturday’s game against USC at Seattle is a huge one for Washington Coach Don James. His Huskies began the last decade by reaching the Rose Bowl after the 1980 and ’81 seasons, but haven’t been there since. . . .

College football fans will love “Game Day USA,” a 208-page book that captures the passion of the sport, mostly in photographs. . . .

NFL scouts are bullish on Virginia quarterback Shawn Moore. . . .

Congratulations to former NBA all-star forward Chet Walker, who co-produced the Emmy award winning “A Mother’s Courage: The Mary Thomas Story.” . . .

It’ll be interesting to see how the Dodgers’ acquisition of Dennis Cook affects their attempts to re-sign another left-hander, Fernando Valenzuela. . . .

The lockout should mean hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional gate receipts for the Pittsburgh Pirates when they play host to the New York Mets in the last three games of the extended season. . . .

I don’t know if even Roger Clemens can save the Boston Red Sox from total collapse. . . .

In a year when he really isn’t pitching that well, Doc Gooden has increased his overall winning percentage from .719 to .722, best in major league history. . . .

Angel shortstop Dick Schofield credits a heavier bat for his improved hitting. Dodger second baseman Juan Samuel credits a lighter bat for his improved hitting. . . .

One race that could go to the last day is between the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves for the worst record in the majors.

Buster Douglas’ trainer, John Russell, on the difference between Douglas, whose training habits have been criticized, and Evander Holyfield: “We don’t have a bodybuilder, we’ve got a fighter.” . . .

Douglas knocked down sparring partner Eljiah Tillery with a left hook Sunday at the Mirage hotel in Las Vegas, where the heavyweight champion is preparing to make his first title defense against Holyfield Oct. 25. . . .

About 11,000 of the 16,000 seats in the Mirage’s outdoor stadium have been sold. . . .

Ticket sales for the Tony Lopez-Jorge Paez bout Saturday in Sacramento have reached $562,837, which breaks the California record set by the second Muhammad Ali-Ken Norton fight at the Forum in 1973. . . .

Actor Ben Frank, who died last week of a heart attack at 56, fought professionally and once was managed by Gil Clancy. . . .

Not much had been heard lately about Spectacular Bid’s trainer, Buddy Delp, until his Dispersal upset Criminal Type, among others, in the Woodward Handicap in New York Saturday. . . .

Sonny Vaccaro, who recently toured Europe with Michael Jordan, says Jordan is so popular in Spain that security was needed to protect him in the lobby of their hotel. “He’s like a rock star over there,” Vaccaro said. “In Paris, the fans stormed the court to shake hands with him and get his autograph during a slam-dunk contest.” . . .

Mike Lanier, the 7-foot-6 UCLA transfer from Hardin-Simmons, towered over 7-0 Clipper center Benoit Benjamin in a pickup game at Pauley Pavilion the other day. . . .

How nice of Brian Shaw to agree to play for the Boston Celtics this season. . . .

Politics could be taken out of the selection of the 1992 U.S. Olympic basketball coach by automatically giving the job to the coach of the 1991 NBA championship team. . . .

Overheard at the Rose Bowl late Saturday afternoon: “It’s a good thing UCLA had somebody to bail Bonds.”
