COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : SAN DIEGO STATE : What, Nothing for James Dean?

Share

The San Diego State football team isn’t perfect on the field, but give them credit for creativity off it. When requesting complimentary tickets, players are required by the NCAA to fill out a form listing who the tickets are for and what relation that person has to the player.

Before the SDSU season opener at Oregon two weeks ago, football secretary Carole Hendry received a list that included the following requests: defensive lineman Mike Ibe (for Arnold Schwarzenegger, brother); defensive lineman Ramondo Stallings (Elvis Presley, nephew; Morton Downey Jr., brother) and defensive back Johnny Walker (former Air Force quarterback Dee Dowis and former SDSU running back Darrin Wagner, no relationship given). The best request, however, came from defensive back Gary Taylor, who asked for tickets for his father: SDSU President Thomas Day.

Obviously, the requests never made it to Oregon. And after practice Wednesday, SDSU Coach Al Luginbill told the players they were going to have to get serious on their requests.

No, he couldn’t keep a straight face while telling them.

Quarterback David Lowery is getting plenty of attention this week. He’s playing the role of Ty Detmer on SDSU’s BYU scout team, which means he is passing often from all kinds of locations.

“It’s all right,” Lowery said. “That’s pretty much the type of quarterback I am. I’m not saying I’m Ty Detmer, but I’m a rollout quarterback.”

Lowery is scrambling to get the SDSU defense ready.

OK, so walk-on freshman defensive back Marcus Preciado has had trouble with his jersey in each of the first two games. On both his road and home jerseys, SDSU equipment personnel spelled his name “PERCIADO.” So, Marcus, what do you think? “The funny thing is, they spelled it different on my locker,” he said. Turns out his locker says “PRECIDO.” . . . SDSU Coach Al Luginbill said running back Tommy Booker will make the trip to Brigham Young Saturday even though he is doubtful. Booker is over the flu but still has a sprained left ankle.
