The University of California Board of Regents voted today to begin negotiations on renewing $2 billion in federal contracts to run two nuclear weapons laboratories and a research facility.

The university system’s relationship with the Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos national laboratories has sparked strong opposition among faculty, students and peace activists.

But only four of the 26 regents meeting in Los Angeles voted against renewing the contracts.

The vote allows university officials to begin talks with the U.S. Department of Energy on the renewal of the five-year contracts. The current contracts are set to expire in 1992.
