PRO FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : CHARGERS : Memories of Cleveland Aren’t Warm

Share

About all Cleveland means to running back Ronnie Harmon and punter John Kidd of the Chargers is sand, ice, bad memories and misery.

Last season, Harmon and Kidd were on the Buffalo Bills, who lost to the Browns, 34-30, in the AFC divisional playoff game at Cleveland. Sunday they will return as Chargers.

“The field actually ought to be in pretty good shape at this time of year,” Kidd said. “Last year, it was a disgrace.”

It was covered with sand, and the few patches of grass were covered with ice.

“So you went from a beach to an ice rink all on the same field,” Kidd said.

Kidd and Harmon don’t miss Cleveland any more than they miss Buffalo.

“We had a lot of dissention in Buffalo,” Kidd said. “There was always a lot of second-guessing and back stabbing.”

Said Harmon: “There were too many things going on besides football. If you weren’t one of the chosen people, you felt like an outsider.”

Wide receiver Scott Schwedes, a fourth-year free agent cut by the Dolphins, was signed by the Chargers on Friday. He will be plugged into the game plan immediately as a punt returner.

Cornerback Gill Byrd said medical tests haven’t yet determined what is wrong with his 6-year old son, Gill Jr., who has been sick with a high temperature for the past week.

Weather prediction for Sunday in Cleveland: High of 50 degrees with a 60 percent chance of rain.
