SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

My Sonny Boy lived up to trainer Bill Spawr’s expectations with a 3 3/4-length, track-record victory in the $53,900 C.B. Afflerbaugh Stakes at Fairplex Park on Sunday afternoon.

With jockey Corey Nakatani weaving his way through traffic around the clubhouse turn, My Sonny Boy took the lead on the far turn and cruised past pace-setting He’s A Saros. Favored Stylish Stud was another 2 1/4 lengths back in third in the field of 10 older runners.

Sent off at 10-1, My Sonny Boy returned $23 after going 1 1/16 miles in 1:42, eclipsing Iron Leader’s track record of 1:42 1/5.

With the leaders tightly bunched into the clubhouse turn, Nakatani saved valuable ground.

“Spawr told me to take him back at the break,’ said the winning rider. “When I was on the backstretch for the second time, he was just pulling at the bit so much that I let him roll.”

Also at Fairplex Park Sunday, Tolls Touch scored a three-quarter-length victory in the $171,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity for quarter horses at 350 yards.

With John Creager aboard, Tolls Touch earned $76,950 in the meet’s richest race. Tolls Touch paid $21, running 350 yards in 17.61.
