A 38-year-old South Los Angeles woman may lose her eyesight as a result of wounds she suffered during a drive-by shooting in which, police say, her son was the intended target.

Carmen Hernandez was standing in front of her home in the 3600 block of South Griffith Avenue with her son, Romero Rodriguez, 19, and her 15-year-old daughter about 9 p.m. Tuesday when a passenger in a car fired several times with a shotgun, police said. Hernandez was hit in the face.

Doctors at County-USC Medical Center were struggling Wednesday to save Hernandez’s sight, police said. Rodriguez was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and released.
