SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV

The final weekend of baseball’s regular season shares time with college and NFL football on a busy sports television weekend.

The Cincinnati Reds face the San Diego Padres at 12:15 p.m. on KCBS Channel 2 and KFMB Channel 8. If the Reds clinched the NL West title Friday, Channel 2 will air the Boston Red Sox-Toronto Blue Jays game. ESPN will air Sunday’s Red Sox-Blue Jays game at 10 a.m.

Elsewhere in baseball, the New York Mets continue their long-shot bid for the NL East title against the Chicago Cubs at 10:30 a.m. today and Sunday on WGN. Sunday’s game will also be televised on WWOR.

The Dodgers make their final KTTV Channel 11 appearance of 1990 at 12:30 p.m. Sunday against the San Francisco Giants.

Cable superstation WGN will air its final telecast from Chicago’s Comiskey Park at 5 p.m. today with the White Sox taking on the Seattle Mariners. Sunday is the last game in the stadium’s 81-year history.

College football’s game of the day matches No. 3 Auburn (2-0) against No. 5 Tennessee (3-0-1) at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN in a game that could have national championship implications.

A frustrating day is in store for Notre Dame fans, not because Purdue is facing the top-ranked Fighting Irish beginning at 10 a.m. It’s the first of three consecutive live Notre Dame football telecasts this season on SportsChannel, which is received in only 145,000 homes. The next Fighting Irish telecast available to all viewers will be Oct. 20 against archrival and reigning national champion Miami (Fla.) on CBS.

In a matchup that often came on New Year’s Day in Pasadena during the John McKay and Woody Hayes era, No. 18 USC faces No. 15 Ohio State at 12:30 p.m. on Channels 7, 3 and 42. Still-struggling UCLA visits Washington State for an 8 p.m. ESPN telecast.

In other games involving area teams, Cal State Fullerton makes its only television appearance of the season against perennial Big West Conference powerhouse Fresno State at 7 p.m. on SportsChannel. San Diego State hosts Air Force at 8 p.m. on Prime Ticket, and Cal Lutheran meets Sonoma State at 1:30 p.m. on KADY Channel 63.

With the Rams (and the rest of the NFC West) idle, and the Raiders failing to sell out the 92,000-seat Coliseum 72 hours before kickoff, there is a rather lackluster NFL television schedule Sunday. The New York Giants (3-0) face the Dallas Cowboys (1-2) for the second time in three weeks on Channels 2 and 8, while Channels 4 and 39 air a game between the Kansas City Chiefs (2-1) and the Cleveland Browns (1-2) at 1 p.m. On TNT at 5 p.m., the Phoenix Cardinals (1-2) host Washington (2-1) in a rematch of the Redskins 31-0 win on opening day.
