SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Pomona-Pitzer Earns Comeback Win, 30-20

Pomona-Pitzer has not won a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship since 1956, but the Sagehens appear to be a contender this season.

Pomona-Pitzer defeated Whittier, 30-20, in a SCIAC game Saturday at Pomona to improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Whittier (0-3, 0-3) led 20-17 in the fourth quarter, but the Sagehens went ahead with 10 seconds left on a two-yard touchdown run by Chris Smith.

Pomona added its final touchdown on a 60-yard interception return by Nate Kirtman as time expired.

Pomona-Pitzer quarterback Scott Hamburg completed 16 of 31 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 35, Cal State Hayward 16--Darryl McChristian gained 166 yards in 26 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Mustangs (4-0) in a nonconference victory over the Pioneers (1-4) at Hayward.

David Lafferty completed 24 of 39 passes for 421 yards and two touchdowns for the Mustangs, who are ranked eighth in NCAA Division II.

Cal State Northridge 14, UC Davis 10--Albert Fann rushed for 87 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 18 and 11 yards in a nonconference game at Northridge as the Matadors (3-1) beat the Aggies (2-2) for the first time since 1981.

Occidental 38, La Verne 27--Craig Hartley, making his first start at tailback, gained 228 yards in 39 carries to lead the Tigers (2-2, 2-0) in a SCIAC victory over the Leopards (0-3, 0-2) at La Verne.

Chris Nance gained 242 in 24 carries and scored two touchdowns for La Verne.

Azusa Pacific 19, Humboldt State 17--Brian Hunt completed 23 of 43 passes for 307 yards and a touchdown and Jim Petrotta kicked four field goals as the Cougars (3-1) beat the Lumberjacks (0-3-1) in a nonconference game at Azusa.

Menlo 23, Claremont 7--Menlo (4-0) stuffed Claremont (0-3) for minus 31 yards rushing in a nonconference game at Claremont.

San Francisco State 42, UC Santa Barbara 26--The Gators (1-3) rushed for 411 yards against the Gauchos (2-2) in a nonconference game at Goleta.

Sonoma State 24, Cal Lutheran 2--The Cossacks (2-2) gained 392 yards and breezed past the Kingsmen (0-4) in a nonconference game at Thousand Oaks.
