Commissioner Paul Tagliabue fined Cincinnati’s Sam Wyche nearly $30,000, the most ever assessed an NFL coach, for excluding a female reporter from the Bengals’ locker room.

The league refused to disclose the amount of the fine, describing it only as one-seventeenth of Wyche’s annual pay. Wyche, who reportedly makes $500,000 per year, was not suspended.

“I’ll end up, I guess, paying the fine,” said Wyche, who as a coach has no avenue of appeal in the NFL. “No amount of fine will force me to change my conviction on this matter.”

The largest previous fine for a coach was $5,000, levied against several for public criticism of officials and on-field conduct.
