COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Simmons Keys Antelope Valley
Tony Simmons rushed for 228 yards and four touchdowns to lead Antelope Valley College to a 34-6 Foothill Conference victory over host Rio Hondo on Saturday night.
Simmons, a freshman from St. Petersburg, Fla., scored on runs of six, 66, 63, and nine yards.
In his previous four games, Simmons had gained 174 yards without scoring a touchdown.
Antelope Valley racked up 425 yards rushing.
“All week long, the coaches were preaching that the defense was ahead of the offense,” Simmons said. “So this week we wanted to catch them.”
Both teams handled the ball poorly. Antelope Valley (4-0-1 overall, 2-0-1) lost three fumbles and had one pass intercepted; Rio Hondo (0-5, 0-3) lost three fumbles and had two passes intercepted.
