From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

Two brush fires burned out of control in Ventura County today, threatening more Southern California homes a day after fires fanned by Santa Ana winds damaged 28 residences in Diamond Bar and Riverside.

A 700-acre blaze threatened homes in dense brush near South Mountain, south of Santa Paula, said Ventura County fire dispatcher CeCe Grives. Three air tankers and more than 220 firefighters attacked the blaze, which began at 11 p.m. Monday and raged uncontained.

Firefighters formed a defense line overnight to protect 20 homes from the flames near South Mountain, Grives said. Residents were not evacuated.

Another fire broke out at 8 a.m. today and raced up a brushy hill 10 miles north in the rural Mupu area of Santa Paula Canyon, blackening about 100 acres but not threatening homes.
