Last-Minute Score and Conversion Run Give Katella Victory

Katella High School quarterback Chris Reed’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Art Vance and the ensuing two-point conversion with 16 seconds remaining in the game gave Katella a 22-21 victory over Cypress in an Empire League game Friday at Western High School.

The 30-yard touchdown play came on fourth-and-20 with Reed hitting Vance in the left corner of the end zone. Katella (2-4, 1-0 in league) then lined up in a kick formation to go for the tie, but two offsides penalties by Cypress moved the ball from the three- to the one-yard line, and Katella decided to go for the two.

Reed dove over the top on a quarterback sneak for the score.

“We had a fake kick called all the way,” Katella Coach Larry Anderson said. “But the penalties basically forced us to go for two, and we barely made it.”

Reed set up Katella’s final drive when he intercepted a pass in the end zone with 5:06 left.

Running back Bryan Dawson rushed for 172 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns for Cypress (2-4, 0-1).
