USD’s Fuller Wins Twice, Advances to Regional Semis

University of San Diego tennis player Tonya Fuller advanced to the semifinals of the Rolex ITCA Southern California Regionals Friday by defeating two Pepperdine players. In the round of 16, Fuller beat Camilla Ohrman in the round of 16, 6-1, 6-0, and then defeated Anna Brunstrom, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

Third-seeded Krista Amend of Arizona State defeated USD freshman Laura Richards, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16. Amend is Fuller’s semifinal opponent today at 9 a.m. Kara Brady of USD lost to Alix Creek of Arizona, 6-4, 6-0, in the round of 16.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State (13-7, 1-1) defeated Wyoming, 16-14, 9-15, 12-15, 15-13, 15-4, in a WAC match in Laramie, Wyo.

The Aztecs were led by Angela Martin, who had 25 kills, and Stephanie Riley, who had five blocks.

Wyoming is 13-5, 1-2.

MEN’S SOCCER

Jim Gabarra kicked in his second goal of the game 25 seconds into overtime to give the Sockers a 5-4 exhibition victory against the Stars in front of 12,371 in the Tacoma Dome.

The Sockers were down 4-1 going into the fourth quarter. Paul Wright tied it off an assist from newcomer Alex Golovnia.

Wright and Branko Segota finished with a goal and an assist each. Brian Quinn scored the other Socker goal.

Victor Nogueira played the entire game in goal for the Sockers. It was the Sockers’ first indoor exhibition of the season.

Phillip Button had a goal and an assist to lead the University of San Diego past visiting Pennsylvania, 2-0, for the Toreros’ fourth consecutive victory. Charles Adair scored the first goal with 13 seconds left in the first half assisted by Toby Taitano and Button.

Button’s goal was assisted by Taitano and Andrew Kummer. Tom Tate recorded his seventh shutout of the season for USD (10-1-4). Penn fell to 2-5-1.

San Diego State defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 2-0, at Aztec Bowl.

The Aztecs (8-4-2) took a 1-0 lead when Dain de Forest crossed a ball into the middle that was knocked in by a Bakersfield defender. David Quesada scored the final goal off a crossing pass from Maurico Ingrassia.

UC San Diego defeated visiting Westminster, 2-1, behind two penalty kicks by Sean West. The game winner with 15:26 remaining. UCSD, ranked fifth in Division III, improved to 12-2-1. Westminster fell to 13-2.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UC San Diego defeated visiting Westmont, 3-1. UCSD’s Karin Lindsey scored a goal for the fifth consecutive game. Cheryl Parker and Jaymie Bradford also scored for UCSD (9-2-1), ranked third in Division III.
