ORANGE — Quarterback Jose Prado of El Modena was cool under pressure, teaming with tailback Adam Garcia and the Vanguard wide receivers in a come-from-behind, 16-15 victory over Canyon before 2,000 at El Modena Friday night.
Garcia’s 13-yard touchdown run with 6:49 to play provided the winning points.
A fumble recovery by El Modena’s Andy Bourdelais with a minute left ended Canyon’s last drive.
Prado completed 10 of 11 passes for 144 yards despite a strong Canyon pass rush, hitting wide receiver Jerry Kanaly for a touchdown. Prado, 5-9, 160 pounds, drew double duty as the Vanguard kicker, scoring an extra point and a 28-yard field goal. He also had a 58-yard run.
Mistakes and penalties played a big part in the game. Canyon (3-4, 1-1 in league) scored in the first quarter after Tony Trujillo recovered an El Modena fumble. Jeff Brunswig scored from the three on the next play, tying the game, 7-7.
One unsportsmanlike call and an offsides penalty against El Modena (4-3, 2-0) helped Canyon score its second touchdown on Brunswig’s two-yard run, giving the Comanches a 15-7 lead.
Prado’s field goal made it 15-10.
