Wayne Duplantis kicked five field goals to tie a national record and lead Golden West College to a 22-13 victory over Riverside in a Mission Conference game Saturday at Orange Coast.

But the game was tainted by a third-quarter incident during which Sam Manu, a sophomore linebacker for Riverside, punched official Nick Van Lue, knocking him unconscious for more than a minute.

After a flag was thrown for a late hit at the end of a Golden West rushing play, Manu, upset with the call, took a swing and hit Van Lue in the jaw.

Although it was clear Manu hit the official, it was unclear who his target was.

“I don’t know what happened,” Riverside Coach Barry Meier said. “Until I find out, I can’t say what the result will be.”

When Van Lue, who lives in Rancho Palos Verdes, regained consciousness, he walked out of the stadium without help but had no comment for reporters. Manu was ejected and immediately taken back to Riverside.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Golden West Coach Ray Shackleford said. “And I don’t think it’s representative of Riverside as a team.”

Golden West’s defense, which entered Saturday leading the conference with 233 yards allowed per game, was again outstanding. The Rustlers gave up 212 yards, caused four fumbles, intercepted three passes and forced Riverside to turn the ball over on downs four times. Kevin Ashworth, a sophomore linebacker, had 12 tackles and twice got to Riverside punter Vince Enserro before he could get the ball away.

Golden West led, 19-6, at the half thanks to three field goals by Duplantis and a 12-yard scoring pass from quarterback David Brunet to Frank Vaccaro.

Riverside’s Jack Manu, no relation to Sam, scored on a one-yard run and Riverside cut the lead to 19-13 with 13:39 left.

But the big play for the Golden West defense was on a fourth and one at the Riverside 22. Unlike the previous Saturday, when the Rustlers jumped offsides in a similar situation in a 14-7 loss to Palomar, this time the line stayed put, then caused a fumble. The ball was recovered by Mitch Melbon at the Riverside 23.

The drive stalled, and Duplantis made a 33-yard field goal with 1:32 left to give Golden West a 22-13 lead. His field goals, from 22, 25, 27, 21 and 33 yards, set a Golden West single-game record and tied the state and national marks held by several kickers, including Riverside’s Jeff McDaniel this season.

Vaccaro rushed for a career-high 135 yards in 27 carries for Golden West (5-1, 4-1 in the Mission Conference). Riverside is 4-2, 3-2.
