Lewis Sets an SWC Rushing Record as Texas A&M; Trounces Rice, 41-15

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. — Darren Lewis became the Southwest Conference’s all-time leading rusher Saturday, and Kevin Smith returned interceptions 35 and 78 yards for touchdowns as Texas A&M; rolled to a 41-15 victory over Rice.
Lewis rushed 25 times for 176 yards to take the SWC career rushing lead at 4,453 yards. Lewis’ 54-yard run set up his own short scoring plunge to put the Aggies, 5-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the SWC, on top, 24-12.
Eric Dickerson of Southern Methodist owned the SWC career rushing mark of 4,450 yards from 1979-82. Earl Campbell of Texas is third at 4,277.
Trevor Cobb established one season rushing record for Rice (3-5, 1-4) by getting 132 yards in 29 carries to give him 970, breaking the record of 945 yards in 1971 by Staley Vincent.
