COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Finally Gets Newland His 500th Victory

UC Irvine defeated Air Force, 12-10, in overtime in a first-round water polo game of the Cal State Long Beach 49er tournament at Belmont Plaza to give Coach Ted Newland his 500th career victory.

The match was tied, 9-9, at the end of regulation time. Kevin Leinbach scored in the first overtime period to give Irvine a 10-9 advantage. In the second overtime, Mark Herman and Steve Gill scored before Air Force added a late goal.

Irvine’s Skylar Putman had four goals and Gill had three in the game against Air Force.

In Irvine’s second-round game, top-ranked California defeated No. 8 Irvine, 9-7. Chris Oding had four goals to lead California. Gill had four goals for Irvine (10-11).

Newland now has a career record of 500-178-5.

At the Volvo Collegiate men’s tennis championships at the University of Georgia, two UC Irvine players advanced in the pre-qualifying round.

Jeff Miyamoto of Irvine defeated Brett deCurtinn of the University of Cincinnati, 6-1, 6-4, and Jonathan Parker of Irvine defeated Ken Grimm of Cincinnati, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2).

Andy Zurcher of Notre Dame defeated Brett Stern of Irvine, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

UC Santa Barbara 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Maria Reyes had 13 kills and seven aces and Kristi Ryan had 11 kills and nine digs to lead Santa Barbara (22-4, 9-3) to a 15-5, 15-2, 15-5 victory. Stephanie Scofield had seven kills and 11 digs for Cal State Fullerton (6-22, 2-9).

Pacific 3, UC Irvine 2--Krissy Fifer had 28 kills and eight blocks to lead Pacific (20-2, 9-2) to a 15-6, 12-15, 13-15, 15-2, 15-1 victory at UC Irvine. Irvine (7-15, 3-9) was led by Kim Collins’ 17 kills and 16 digs.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Westmont 3, Southern California College 0--Shannon Jones’ serving and Felicia Fortosis’ setting led Westmont (20-8, 9-3) to a 15-11, 18-16, 15-7 victory at Southern California College. Senior Heather Frewin had 12 kills and 12 digs and senior setter Kathy Westfall had 27 assists and 12 digs for Southern California College (16-19, 2-10).

At the Master’s College cross-country invitational, Southern California College finished fifth in both the men’s and women’s races. Fresno Pacific won the men’s division and Westmont won the women’s.

Bob Gorman of Westmont won the men’s individual race with a time of 15 minutes 20 seconds on a three-mile course. Tim Bryan (16:19) finished 11th for Southern California College. Michelle Lubinsky (11:41 on a two-mile course) of Westmont won the women’s individual race and Amber Coley (12:01) was fourth for Southern California College.
