White Advances in Slims Event
Robin White of Del Mar defeated Patricia Tarabini of Argentina, 6-3, 6-4, Monday night in the $350,000 Virginia Slims of California tournament.
She will face top-seeded Martina Navratilova in the second round. Navratilova received a bye in the first round.
Also advancing was Andrea Temesvari of Hungary, who beat Florencia Labat of Argentina 6-2, 6-0. Temesvari, once ranked No. 7, is attempting a comeback after a two-year break from the tour. She now ranks 148th.
In other matches, Mary Lou Daniels and Marianne Werdel came from behind to score first round victories. Daniels, of Chicago, beat Monique Javer of Hillsborough, Calif., 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Werdel, a former Stanford player from Palo Alto, beat Mercedez Paz of Argentina, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
