NOTEBOOK : Glendale Ends Long Drought Against Muir

It certainly would be understandable if the Glendale High football team was less than inspired against Crescenta Valley on Friday.

After all, Glendale is coming off what might be its biggest victory in 25 years--a 23-8 win at home over Muir.

The victory last Friday at Moyse Field was Glendale’s first over Muir since 1965 and it ended a 13-game losing streak against the perennially powerful Mustangs.

“I think we’ll start getting some respect now,” said Glendale Coach Don Shoemaker, whose team is 8-0 overall, 3-0 in Pacific League play.

Glendale tailback Pathon Rucker, who has rushed for 1,259 yards this season, was limited to 76 yards against Muir. But the junior tailback still scored two touchdowns, including one on a 70-yard pass play from quarterback Eric Kiesau.

Friendly confines: Last week, Moyse Field was the site of Glendale High’s historic win over Muir. This week, Glendale College is hoping the stadium holds similar good fortune.

The Vaqueros, 5-2 overall and 5-1 in Western State Conference play, will meet Moorpark in a key WSC Northern Division game.

Moorpark, ranked second in the state behind Bakersfield, is led by sophomore running back Freddie Bradley, who leads conference backs in rushing with 1,407 yards. The Raiders average a WSC-best 494.6 yards on offense and are second in defense (247.7 yards a game).

Glendale is led by freshman running back Bobby Webster, who is second in the WSC in rushing with 1,007 yards.

Victory at last: It took seven games, but the Verdugo Hills football team finally earned its first victory with a 21-13 win over Hollywood last Friday.

The Dons (1-6) were led by senior Tim Fagan, who caught two touchdown passes and intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter to help preserve the win.

Career leader: Jos Bergmann’s record-setting season came to an end last week as the Occidental women’s soccer team finished second in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference behind Pomona-Pitzer.

Bergmann, a senior forward, had a school-record 30 goals and seven assists in 14 matches for the Tigers, who finished 5-2-2 in conference play. Pomona-Pitzer was 6-1-1.

Bergmann finished her career with school records for goals (57) and points (135).

Champions again: The Occidental men’s and women’s cross country teams won SCIAC championships last week with impressive performances at La Mirada Park.

The men, led by Marcial Beltran, swept the first four places to win their eighth conference championship in nine seasons.

The women, led by Laurie Schuster with a second-place finish, placed five runners in the top nine to win their second SCIAC title in three seasons.

Both teams advance to the NCAA Division III Far West regional on Nov. 10 at Bonelli Park in San Dimas.
