PRO FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : CHARGERS : Byrd, Miller Hobbled by Injuries

Share

Cornerback Gill Byrd, whose list of injuries reached five with an ankle sprain Thursday, was still unsure Friday whether he would be ready for Sunday’s game at Seattle.

The Chargers held Byrd out of practice Friday and downgraded his status from questionable to doubtful, though Byrd said his ankle had improved. “I feel pretty good about it because I can walk normally,” he said. “There’s still a little pain here and there.”

Also in pain was receiver Anthony Miller, who suffered back spasms in Thursday’s practice and was moving gingerly in the locker room Friday.

“It feels all right,” he said. “I’ll be ready on Sunday.”

If he’s not, the Chargers’ passing game figures to have a big hole. Miller has caught 33 passes this season, the three other receivers have combined for 19.

Quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver says his group isn’t going forward without Miller.

“Let’s put it this way,” he said, “if the 10 of us other guys are going out on the field, Anthony Miller’s going out on the field. That’s the way it is. Anthony will be at full speed. He’s fine.”

Other injuries:

Tackle Broderick Thompson is “very, very questionable” with an ankle sprain, Coach Dan Henning said. Thompson normally plays on the right side and, if he is unable to play, the Chargers may move his backup, Eric Floyd, to right tackle and use Joel Patten at left tackle. Patten came off injured reserve a week ago and played sparingly in Sunday’s 41-10 victory over Tampa Bay.

Henning said left tackle Leo Goeas is questionable after arthroscopic knee surgery Monday. Others with nicks are cornerback Donnie Elder (ankle) and safeties Vencie Glenn (thigh) and Martin Bayless (calf).
